Say It Ain't So!
As much as I hate to add a some rain to our Mardi Gras parades, I have to note that I just learned from Alex Rawls' Pop Life blog of the passing of the great, and now immortal New Orleans guitarist and human jukebox, Snooks Eaglin, on February 18th. Read his Times-Picayune obit.
You will note that Snooks was featured guitarist on the Wild Magnolias cut posted last week (see below). He also played guitar on 'Sugar Boy' Crawford's "Jock-A-Mo" in 1954, among countless other sessions. Another irreplaceable, uniquely New Orleans artist, he will be truly missed. Needless to day, I'll be doing a full feature on Snooks soon. So, stay tuned.
Now, let's lift an overflowing go-cup in his honor as we resume our revelries. . . .
UPDATE, 2/24/2009,Mardi Gras Day: Upon returning home from a day of local partying, I was saddened to learn from Marco in the comments that Antoinette K-Doe died this morning. The widow of Ernie K-Doe, she was a tireless promoter of her husband before and after his death, and kept the Mother-In-Law Lounge going
in spite of his passing, Katrina, and various other adversities. Read Keith Spera's obituary of her at nola.com. Another fine person and asset to the New Orleans community is gone.
Howdy--- we all feel the pain of the passing of Snooks-- another good man down. Thanks for all the great music. Also, the link you've posted for your Mardi Gras mix seems to be broken-- thought you would like to know. Have a great Mardi Gras Day!
ReplyDeleteWell, the "HOTG Radio" link works - but the stream seems to be down at the site, or somewhere in the chain. I'll have the crack tech support team get on it - if they're not smoking crack at the moment. So, do try back later for the Mardi Gras Mix. It was working a few hours ago. Maybe, high demand crashed the server....well, it was a thought.
ReplyDeleteThanks for letting me know, Johnny,
and for the kind words. Enjoy yourself!
As of 8:30 PM US Central time, the stream was back up and is still running as I type this about an hour later. So, enjoy.
ReplyDeleteSad news that Snooks passed away, he was a true legend of New Orleans and a great entertainer ! I have his Live CD in Japan great collection of tunes !
ReplyDeleteAre you going to Mardi Gras in New Orleans ?
Down mix of the best NOLA grooves that I have heard on the Internets. I just heard that Antoinette K-Doe passed early Mardi Gras morning.
