What am I doing here?

The question keeps coming up (well, twice) in the comments about being able to download the audio stream from this blog. I don't think you can do it. At least, I don't know how to do it. If you want to download mp3 files, there are numerous sources to do that. I'd be surprised if any of them had all the stuff I'm blogging; but it's possible. But, my "service" here is not to do that - well, not yet, anyway. I am trying to do this on the cheap with limited technical expertise. So, just consider this site a place that can give you a glimpse of the obscure delights available for the avid New Orleans music collector/fan. It's a heads up about what's out there....somewhere. To me, downloading is almost too easy (besides being considered illegal by the Powers That Be). But that's just me. I'm a geezer. It's just worth more to me if I have to do some work to get it. Every tune I blog has a back story about the where, when and how I found it. That doesn't make it a better tune. It just has more of that good mojo on it for me.

I'll get that Willie Tee up real soon........

Dan,

Keep doing what you're doing. Stick with streaming audio. Too many folks out there have this sense of entitlement about downloading music and frankly, I find it a tad presumptuous and spoiled. You're already performing a huge public service by bringing these songs to light; if people truly are into the music, they'll go FIND IT THEMSELVES. Some want to treat what we do as iTunes For Free except we're not getting paid to make downloading easier for them. Folks need to deal with that.

Respect,

Oliver

obviously this is your blog and you can do whatever you want with it - but I have to disagree with the esteemed mr. wang. When I'm wishing you would make your music downloadable, it's not out of a sense of entitlement...

...it's more because I wish i could take these great tunes home with me and listen to them over a nice sound system, instead of at work where i have fast internet but shitty speakers.

and really, isn't this whole thing about sharing the musical goodness with other heads? Information wants to be free! If one is just streaming impossibly rare things, it seems more to be about showing off one's collection... i don't mean to sound ungrateful for what you're doing with this site. and i'm going to put my money where my mouth is and start my own (download-friendly) mp3 blog this weekend.

The stuff I blog is not "impossibily rare". That would mean you could never hope to find it. I am finding sites all the time that stream obscurities; and some give you the option to download. Maybe you'll see one of my selections there. Offer downloads all you want
on your spot. That's not what I am up to. I am posting rare stuff, sure, meaning hard to get. Not impossible. Again, my "service" is just to give collectors or the curious a taste of what's "out there", not necessarily on the internet, either. You might have to get your hands dirty and breathe some dust rummaging through the vinyl bins (what's left of them). Or you might have to (gasp) buy something on e-bay or some other on-line outlet, or wait for a CD re-issue. Most of the stuff I am blogging I have seen for sale on-line. If you really want a good quality copy to play on a good sound system, don't bother with barely adequate mp3 compressed digital fascimiles. They ain't the real deal, anyway, brother. Peace.
